Juice Update: The Verdict

September 12, 2016

If you are new to my page, I declared a few days ago that I was  embarking on a 7 day juice cleanse. My boyfriend and I bought a juicer and a ton of fruit and veggies and prepared to drink nothing but juice to reset, detox and renew our bodies.

However, it did not go as planned. Today, would have been day 6 but I called it off after day 3. Here is what happened:

Day 1:

I woke up around 8:30 and drank 3 liters of water. (I use a glass pickle jar to drink out of.) I went for a 3 mile run and had my first juice at 11:50 am, which was simply 7 oranges. I felt great and the juice was absolutely delicious. img_2406

Juice #2: One half of a watermelon around 1:50 pm. I got a slight headache at 2:30, but I didn’t know if that was from the juice or if it was because I was in front of the computer for a long time. The juice kept me full though.

Juice #3: I decided to get some veggies in and I juiced a whole bunch of celery at 4:00 to drink before work. I mixed in a little coconut water because I wasn’t feeling the celery taste. It took me an hour and half to get it down and afterwards I felt bubbly and uncomfortable in my stomach.

Juice #4: One mango, 7 carrots. This was an amazing combination and I loved drinking it. I had this at work around 8:30. I felt bubbly again and a little bloated. After I went to the bathroom I felt good though. I figured all this was just part of the detoxing process. I knew that my digestion wouldn’t be as normal as it usually is. Overall, day was went well and I felt great.

Day 2:

I woke up happy and full of energy, although I was starving. I drank juice #1 at 10:30 am, which consisted of 7 oranges and 14 strawberries. I felt satisfied after with a slight headache again. I was expected this, however, as a lot of what I read prior to this cleanse told me this would happened. Also, this juice combination looked beautiful in my glass 🙂 img_2442

Juice #2: 2 mangoes, 5 carrots around 1:15pm. I drank this after I rode my bike to the beach. Along the way, I felt very mentally clear. The only way I know how to describe it, is that I was kind of in my own little world, but at peace…content. I felt almost elated. It was wonderful. img_2448

Juice #3: I sipped on some coconut water and regular water, until I had my next juice of pineapple and spinach in the late afternoon. I don’t think the pineapple was completely ripe because it was extremely tangy on my tongue after a while. I felt lightheaded again also.

Juice #4: By 7:30 pm, I was really hungry and craving solid food. I wanted to finish the day with something sweet, as my tongue was still feeling strange after the pineapple. I drank 2 cucumbers and 1/2 a watermelon with a little coconut water at 8:15pm.

I slept horribly. I didn’t know if it was because I finished the day with watermelon, something so concentrated with sugar. I was up for hours, even though I was tired. I felt anxious and STARVING. It was very frustrating, but I wanted to put through it so I just laid there until sleep finally came.

Day 3:

I woke up really hungry, tired and irritated. I made a juice of oranges and strawberries again and felt better.

Juice #2: Mangoes and carrots again, which was my favorite juice up to this point. I had this around lunch time

Juice #3: Marty made me a concoction of oranges, carrots and ginger. It was spicy, which was nice after really only having sweet tastes for two days. However, this is when the cleanse started to take a turn for me. I felt tired and irritable again. I was straight up miserable. My stomach felt bubbly again, but I couldn’t go to the bathroom. I had this lasting pain that felt like someone had punched me, hard, right in the gut. I toyed with giving up for awhile because I was just so unhappy. I hate the idea of quitting something half way, however, this detox was suppose to make me feel good. I hadn’t felt this bad since going vegan. So,  I decided to eat a raw meal for dinner and see how I felt after that.

I made cucumber noodles and spinach basil pesto (recipe coming soon!) and I felt SO MUCH BETTER. My stomach stopped freaking out and I was full and able to sleep that night.

Day 4:

Breakfast: We woke up early to go surfing so I just had a smoothie with some fruit and water. I felt good, but I still felt that feeling as if I had been punched.  Halfway through the morning, my stomach started acting up again. After going to the bathroom, I felt better. We ate out at a vegan restaurant and later, before working at 5:30pm, I had a mango. My stomach went crazy. I felt my upper abdomen begin to swell and I could literally see it bulging through my skin. I tried to go to the bathroom, multiple times but I couldn’t. Marty looked up my symptoms online and they seemed to coincide with a sensitivity to fructose, which is the sugar found in fruit. Eating that mango really did me over. We figured that since I was eating such high levels of fruit, by juicing them, that my body just couldn’t digest it properly. The funny is I eat these fruits and vegetables all the time. But I guess by juicing them, it was just too much for my body.

Verdict:

I felt upset at first, because I felt like I failed. I told you all that I was going to be juicing for 7 day and I only made it through 3 days. However, the whole point of eating well and taking care of your body, is actually LISTENING to your body. I can’t respect myself properly if I don’t do this. And my body was telling me that this was not good for me.

I definitely want to try it again someday, because I did feel some positive effects. Aside from the for mentioned elation, my skin was glowing and I felt thin without any bloat. I’m sure if I continued, I would have seen other changes. Next time I will do more research on what juices will work better for my body. I know that I still did my body some good by detoxing for the 2 and 1/2 days so I am  going to be proud of myself. It’s hard work fasting and depriving yourself, but I learned that I don’t need as much food as I think to be full and I can go long time spans without eating, just fine.

Have a happy healthy day 🙂
