Self-Care Tips for the Body, Mind and Soul

May 30, 2017

I created this blog post for the website of the organic skin care company I work for, Lica Cole. (You can check out the original post here!)

But as I was writing it, I was inspired to include it on my own website and share more of my own personal experience with each tip. I feel very strongly about the idea of self-care, as it is often neglected in our busy, bustling world.

If we take the time to care for our bodies, minds, and souls properly, we will be able to be open to the many wonderful gifts life has given us.

Self-care is not a selfish act. In fact, it is necessary in order to be our happy and authentic selves. Too often, we overload ourselves and keep pushing and pushing until we burn out. We feel stressed every day and can actually feel the breakdown of our minds and bodies, because of it.

Life was not meant to be lived this way. That is why self-care is so vitally important. It helps us refocus, wind down and keeps up connected with our inner selves. Once you take the time to care for yourself, everything else in your life will fall into place. It is a vicious, yet beautiful cycle.

It is okay to put yourself first by being kind and loving your own being.

To help you with this journey, here are some holistic, self-care tips that will help you realign your life and create a happy, healthier you.

To function properly, you need water. All the cells and organs of the body need water to perform optimally, as well as lubricate the joints, protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, regulate body temperature, and assist the passage of food through the intestines.

Drink water as much as you can. You will see an improvement in overall energy, in your skin health and in your ability to focus! I notice a complete change in my mood if I haven’t had enough water. It is vitally important to my overall well-being.

Research has shown that eating green, leafy vegetables can improve immunity, promote healthy gut flora, aid in the healing of inflammatory diseases and obesity, and can even control food allergies.

This applies for fruit as well. The more you eat food from the earth, the more your taste buds change to realize how delicious nature’s food really is. You will feel lighter and have more energy, as well!

As your body’s largest organ, your skin needs love too. Find quality skin care products, made with pure, organic ingredients to wash, moisturize, exfoliate and tone. Create a schedule for yourself and stick to it.

I like to go the extra mile and choose a day out of the week to create a spa hour for myself. I will apply a healing mask, take my time exfoliating my skin, shave, and repaint my nails. It makes me feel refreshed, polished and happy.

Moving your body daily can transform your life. Regular exercise will aid in your productivity, help with digestions, keep your energy level and help you fall asleep, faster, at the end of the day. Our bodies need movement to function properly. Working out is also a great self-esteem booster for me.

I have recently committed to doing some form of exercise every day. Running, yoga or even just stretching. I have noticed a HUGE difference in my overall energy leaves throughout the day, I don’t have any “crashes” and I have been sleeping much better. And my body has become more toned, which I am excited about.

Aromatherapy is more than just a relaxing ritual to calm you down after a long day. It is actually an alternative or holistic form of medicine that can heal your mind, body and soul, simultaneously.

I love to diffuse my favorite blend throughout my apartment when I am feeling sluggish or sad. With proven calming, awakening and soothing effects on the mind, I see a difference in my overall mood, just by inhaling

Expanding your mind and broaden your imagination are just two of the NUMEROUS benefits of reading a book. Whether you love to learn and increase your knowledge with non-fiction or want to escape to a different world with fiction, pick up a book. It is the perfect way to end your day and take some quiet time to enjoy yourself.

For me, just add a cup of tea and I am in my happy place.

Your phone is always on. You are always checking social media, watching other people live their lives. Take some time to shut this distraction out and live in the moment.

In January, I did what I called a Social Media Detox, where I deleted all my profiles for the entire month. The results were amazing! (Read about them here!) After a day or two of feeling the withdrawals, I found other ways to spend my time that feeds my soul. I read more,  I meditated, and I felt the world around me in every moment. I felt less discontent and more grateful for what I had.

Take some time to put this distinction aside and see what happens.

We all get down, sad or hurt by someone. Sometimes you don’t even want to leave the couch.

That is okay. By letting yourself feel the emotion, the sooner you will overcome it. Too often we are told to stuff how we really feel deep down inside us.

Well, I am saying, don’t resist. The sooner you get it all out the sooner you can move on.

This is such a powerful tool that goes beyond helping the mind. It helps the body and the soul as well. Meditation can help us to eliminate negative thoughts, worries, anxiety, all factors that can prevent us feeling happy. It has been proven that the practice of meditation, carried out on a regular basis, will mitigate the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

When you give of ourselves, our time, our resources, we feel better. It is as simple as that. By caring for yourself, you will become more open and able to give to others.

Harboring resentments and hatred toward those who have wronged us can eat us up inside. People will hurt us all the time, but you don’t have to jeopardize your health because of it. I have had to learn this the hard way, but letting go of hate and letting in love is so much better. I can guarantee that.

Let’s face it, it’s a negative world out there and staying positive can be difficult. But it is so vital to your overall happiness.

Resist the urge to gossip, to think poorly of yourself or others by focusing on what you are grateful for.

Choosing positivity will be work, but it will also be the best decision you can make.

This is my new learning obsession. (So expect a blog post in the future lol) It started as a learning project for work and ending up becoming something I pursued on my own.

From what I have learned so far, in order for our bodies to function optimally,  all of the 7 chakras need to be balanced. If one of the energy centers is not functioning well, then the others won’t function as well as they should.

Chakras transmit and receive energy through different sections of the body, translating it emotionally or physically. Too much or too little of this energy can affect the way we think, act and feel. When the chakras are balanced, it allows our energy to flow smoothly through our bodies and feel more at peace and content.

We can become unbalanced on a daily basis.  If one of the energy centers is not functioning well, then the others won’t function as well as they should, which can send our bodies and emotions into free-fall.

By paying attention to our emotional selves, we can find peace and harmony within.

Nothing beats sadness, depression, anxiety or discontentment like gratitude. I like to recite or write down the numerous things that I am grateful in my life, daily.life transform.

This will transform your life.

It allows you to appreciate living in the moment and you become more aware of all the things you are blessed with. Whether it be something big like a loved one in your life, or something simple, like a delicious ripe apple for a snack.

When thinking of what you are grateful for, it is impossible to be unhappy.
